Social Networking

Libraries participating on social networking sites

With the transition to digital age, it has become a necessity for libraries to participate on social networking sites. The number of libraries which adopt Social Networking sites is increasing today. Social networking sites are used for knowledge sharing, information distribution, communication and knowledge gathering. It definitely provides libraries with an innovative and effective way of connecting with their users/ patrons.

Further Libraries also have an advantage in participating on social networking sites. They can inform it's users whats happening, events, programs that are happening in the library, new reads etc. Also it's free, easy to use, popular and continuously being developed.

Some of the reasons why Libraries participate in social networking sites includes:

  • to connect with users and share information
  • promote events
  • lead into catalog, highlight collections
  • marketing of library services

However, there are significant problems as well. The level of confusion, attitude towards these technologies, resistance and even fear surrounding the use of these technologies within the librarians, and the baby boomers need to be addressed. But overall its a good thing for libraries to adopt these technologies in this digital age.
